Colono] F. "VVlieaton, who lias been appointcd Brigadier General, was lior', n Prcrvidence, Rhode Island, May 8 1833, and went through :i civil engineering course in Brown's University. En 1850 he was appoimted assistant of the United States and Mexiran üoundary Survey, and after liavtng been engaged on various other boundary surveys and reconiesances, was made lieutenant of the i'irst United States cavalry in 18Ö5. When 1 be war broke out he was on dut y at the Xew York State Headquarters, and his regiment in the ïield iu July, 1861, received the appointment of Lieutenant eolonel. 2d Rh ode Island A'olu.nteers. He eo.inmanded the regiment at the battle of Buil Hun and was made eolonel. Colonel Wheaton saw active service in many of the campaigns and passed through a number of battles. In 1862, the title of Brigadier General, United States Vol unteers, was given him, and a year later he was made major of the 2d e-avalry. For gallant and meritorious conduct he received four more promotions during the bitterest time of the war. At the close, he was made Major General, United States Army, ly brevet, íor his servite iu thc fieij He was afterward asslgned to th regular iníantry wltb the titlo Ijieutenant Colonel, and engaged J scveral Judian wars.
