The ex-Confederate Demccrats are looking with anxiety to the result of the coming election, which they hope may give them control of the senate again. Senator Benjamin Harrisorij in a report submitted t the senafe in 1882, showed that the Democratie sergeant-at-arms of the senate had ex-Confederates as about 16 per cent. of his force, and that the secretary of the senate had over 22 per cent. of his force made iip of ex-Confederates and only 14 per cent. Union soldiers.
