In a ïecent speech in New York, Chauncey M. Depew told the following good story, in illustrating a point: Mr. Cleveland' letter, in which he dodges entirely the state bank issue of his platform, in which he tries to argue away the constitutionality of protection in bis platform, by saying that it can be 80 managed that there shall be that kind of ]rotection which wil! injure nobody who is now protected or hopes to be protected, at the same time that he etill declares in asentence for mugwump consumption that protection is still robbery, reminds me of an experience I had as a boy up in Pet kskiil. There was a temperance wave which swept over Peekskill ; it embraced everybody. The Eagle Hotel at Peekskill át that time was kept by a good old gentleman, Col. Williams, who was the leading man in the town in eyerything, and respected public opinión. The Colonel was one of the leading menibers of his church. The Colonel was a leader of his party. The Colonel was the leading contributor of all the charitable and public enterprises of the town, and the Colonel said as he communed with hiinself, "I must obey public opinión." So the Colonel could not close his bar because that cut off his revenue. What did he do? Why, he put a sign on the door: "In obedience to the universal desire of this town for temperance I have concocted a temperance drink [laughter], and these are the ingredients : A little whiskey to maUe it strong, a little water to make it weak, a little lemon to make it sour. and a little suirar to make it sweet."
