This book, sent us by the author, Capt. Jomes E. Pilclier, U. S. A., staioned at Fort Kingigold, Rio Grande ?ity, Texas, is one in which the peoile oí th'sj vicinity, and especially thá lethodiet people, will bc greatly inereeted. Eev. Dr. Pil;her was one of he pioneer preaehers oí Michigan. He ame into this state in 1830, being assigned to the "Ann Arbor Circuit," vhich at that time included the most f Wayno, all of Washtenaw, Jackson, nd what Is now Monroe, Lenawee and Hillsdale counties. The circuit was aid 'to have been bounded "on the north Tiy the north pole and on the vest 'by the Paciïic Ocean," - Chicago ïad not been heard of at that time. nie circuit required him to travel over about 400 miles of country, wild and parsely 'inhabited. In order to find is way through the forests he would arry an axe with liim and blaze his vay. It required nerve and oonseration to le a minister of the gosel in those days, and he was possessd of botli. The story of his faithful life, conscrated to God and the establishment of Clinsfs Kingdom among the people, to told in au ent-ertaining way, naking 'the volume more than a menorial One. It ie in part a history of 'the state, and in great part a hisory of Methodism in tlie state. Dr. Pilcher miight be termed the founder of Albion college. He bent all his nergies to the establishment of that nstitution, and built its foundation upon so solid a rock, that if he coulrl o-day ga ze upon its well filled halls, ie would sing with ecstacies of deight : 'Praise God from whom all ilcssmgs flow." Dr. Pilíher will be remembered by a large number of our older citizens. He was stationd here in 1830, in 1837, in 1857, vas presiding eider of this district rom 1SG0 to 1864, amd often preached hcre when upon other circuits. His arly collaague was Bev. Henry Collazer, so dear to the memory of Methodists aiere. He was a worker who never tired, and Is credited with doing more for edwation in the early dnys of tlila státe thán any other one man.
