Earthquakes aro duo to the phcnomcna of plication or folding of the earth's upper Btrata. The same tensiĆ³n and compression wiiich produced many of the mountain ranges U here n action. As the interior of the earth eools it contracts and tends to leave the outer crust behind. The weight of this outer crust. however, is greater than it can sustain, and is therefore compellcd to wrinkle. Thus g'eolog'ists explain the great ridges and furrowt which constitute continents and rivcr basina and they compare this folding of the earth's cru.st with tln wrinkling of the skin of a dried apple. While the process of wrinkling or folding is going on the mighty movement, oi course, destroys tiio equilibrium of the rock strata, and in conseqacnce earthquakos occur and continue with gTeater or less violence until the equilibriutn is again rt Btored
