In "Purchas, HisPilgrimage," arare old-time book, very few copies of which are now in existence, the following accouat is given of the "pigmies" of Ieeland: "There are also Vigmiess or very little men and women here wlio represent the most perfect shape of men, but they are hairy to the utmost joynts of the fingers, the mayles haring boards down to the knees; but, althoug-h they have the shape of a man. yet they have little sense or underBtanding, nor distinct speech, butmake a kind of after the manner of peeso." .
