In South África it is the Kanïr girls who demand references from the womon who desire to engage them as domestics. It is not unusual to see some such advcrtisement as this in the papers: "Sable Moori, of Graskop, is willing to do very light housework in a family where no English servantE are kopt. Those who desire her assistanc-e must be ready to furnish testimoniáis of poort character. No others need apply."
