Miller, City Cterk: Sir- Yon will cali a special meeting of the Common Council tor this eyening, August 9. at 8 o"clock, to consider the question of our present water supply with reference to flre protection. B. M. Thompson, August 9, 1893. Mayor. The cali for special meeting having been read by the Clerk, the following communication from the Mayor was read: Ann Arbor, Aug. 9, 1893. Va the Horwrabli tin Common Council: Gentlemen: This city today is without any adequate flre protection. For a portion of each day duiïng the past three weeks it has been wholly without protection from the water works. When we consider the danger froni fire at this season of the year, at all times, and the present condition of the weather, and the additional fact that there is not i single fire-proof building in the city, the situation is f uil of alarm. You have now under consideration the condition and character of our water supply with reference to its quality lor culinary purposes. The city ought to have an abundant supply of pure and wholesome water. Pure water is a prime necessity both from a financial and sanitary point of view. Foul water promotea neither good health nor imigration. Upon this view of the subject there is no occasion to dweil, nor need I make any suggestion. since you have already taken prompt and efficiënt action in the matter. I think it is agreed among all those who are lainiliar with the situation that the main reservoir is 111 as good a condition toda; as it can be put in uutil it ia paved. lo my judgement, ve OUgfat not tu (irdcr it paved now and tlius Hssume the increased tire risk n vol vod. I ara informed by tlie water company tliat i( the use of water fot Bprinkling isdiscontinued forthree days that t lie company can iill tbe reservoir full. If this can be done, it gbould be done, for then we shall bave immediately ampie Ore protection. As BOOD as the reservoir is lilled. then the water in the catch basins can be drawn off and those basins thoroughly cleanscil without Impairing or endangeririR tiic protection. I tlierefore recommend that the water company be requested to lili the main reservoir imniediately: that all water consuméis in the city" be prohibited from using water for sprinkling for tlie next three days and that tbe water company be requested to turn off the water from any consumer who violates that order and to keep it turned olí until the end of said toree days: that all person who are usinj, water lor power purposes, who can di so without serious injury do so, for three days, and that all our citizens be uified tobe as economical as possible in the use of water during that period Aid. Wagnei' moved that the message be received and placed on file. Adopted. After seveial bours of discussion by the Mayor, AUlermen and cltizens, on motion of Aid. Martin, the Council adjourned to meet tomorrow evening, August lot li. W. !. Miller, City Clerk C'ouu-il Aiiu Ar!....-. Kvg. 14, 1898. Adjouraed seeelom.
