We aro quite sure that if a number of boys and trirls were asked to name the different capitals of our country, the order would be something like tliis: Philadelphia, New York and Washington. ïhis is all right as far as it poes, says the lilue and Gray, but the truth 'is our country has had a good many more eapitals than those named. It may be said that during the revolution the Britifih "kept tbings moving." They would have been very glad to lay hands on the; "rebel" congress; knowinfr which, that body took good care to keep out of their way. Inasmuch as wherever congress went it took the national capital with it, you can readily understand why the following named places bore that honor at the dates named: Philadelphia, f rom September 5, 1774, until December, 1770; lialtimore, from December 20, 1776, to March, 1777; Philadelphia, from March 4, 1777, to September, 1777; Lancaster, Pa., from j September 27, 1777, to September 30, 1777; York, Pa., from September 30, 1777, to July, 1778; Philadelphia, from . July '3, 177á, to June 30, 1783; Princeton, N. J., from June 30, 1788, to November 20, 1788; Annapolis, Md., from November, 17S3. to November, 1784; Trenton, N. .!., from November, 17S4, to January, 17sr,; Xhv Vork, from January 11, 17S5, to 1790, when the seat of provernment was changed to Philadelphia, where it remaiaed until 1800, when it was finally removed to Washington. Thua it is that nine different cities and towns have fiyured as the capital of oir country.
