Kate Ficld'a Washington relates that when Senator Stanford was about to bring forward a certain important ! measure, a Washington correspondent for a San Francisco paper was instructed to secure a "scoop" in the iorm of an interview with the senator, outlining the proposed legislation. The artiele having been written, was left with Mr. Stanford for correction. Next day the writer returned for his manuscript and received great praise from the senator for his excellence. The correspondent's eyes beamed with delight and pride. and, after waiting for the senator to pause in his eulogies, he modestly ventured to ask if he might take the manuscript now and mail it. "Oh, that reminds me," answered the senator, "I gave your manuscript to-day to one of the press associations, to be sent to all the California newspapers. I thought it was a shame, after you had dono such a. .splendid piece of work, that you should see it in print in only one place. Yes, sir, your interview will be in the hands of every newspaper reader in the state. of California to-morrow morning."
