The seemingly strang-e siiggestion is made and strongly pressed in Enpflanc that the men who man the navy shouM be taught how to swim. Ordinarj sailors are instruoted and expected te qualify in swimming, but the marines, firemen and eng-ineers are not, and il is a fact that a large portion of the latter larg-e body of man who serve or, warships cannot swim. It is said thai many more men would have been saved from the Victoria but for this fact; alsc that many sailors who were good swimmers were undoubtedly drag-ged down by the men who were not. The matter has been taken up in parliament, and it is probable that swimming wil] be insisted on as a part of the training of every man serving aboard ship.
