Ordinarj sailors are instruoted and expected te qualify in swimming, but the marines, firemen and eng-ineers are not, and il is a fact that a large portion of the latter larg-e body of man who serve or, warships cannot swim. It is said thai many more men would have been saved from the Victoria but for this fact; alsc that many sailors who were good swimmers were undoubtedly drag-ged down by the men who were not. The matter has been taken up in parliament, and it is probable that swimming wil] be insisted on as a part of the training of every man serving aboard ship.
