At race tracks persons desiring to bet on the result frequently manage to touch the hump of a hunchback, believing that this will bring good luck. Aecording to the beliefs of ancient Arabians and Germans, hunchbacks were the pets of fairies. The latter frequently removed or incrcascd the humps, and hunchbacUs who had thus been treatcd by the fairies were supposod to possess some mystic power.
