A novel application oí the electric search li.ht luis been made in Scotland. Toenáble the workmen to labor throngh the night while a pit was being Bunk a search Hght, the apparatus tor which consisted of an are lamp, a leas and a mirror, inclosed in a i iron caso, was suspended over the pit's mouth. Access to the lamp was obtaiued by ;i sliding shuttor on each sido of the caso. The Hght, says the st. rjOuisGlobe-De.mocrat, was focused or adjusted by :i screw on the top oí the outside of tlie case. and when nec, y the lamp could be ndjusted to diiïuse lip-ht throughout the whole shaft, or be conecutrated at the bottorn. The mirrov. which was in on lts center, could be moved in a vertical direction, so to dellect the raj's of light to any requircd spot, and could be iixeü in iny position Dy a iiiuinu screw. This mcthocl of illumination was found to give tho following advan-' tages: The lig-ht in the shaft bottom was far in excess of that given by the ordinary sinker's lamp, eonsequently more work could be performed in a given time. The lamp, being stationed on the surface, could be g-ot at easily at any time for adjustment without inconvenience to the sinkers, and in the event of the strata givingoS fire-damp it trave perfect iranmnity from danger i oí explosión. Anotlier point of not a little importanee was that by the aid of the lig-ht those in cha.rge could see frota the surface what was going on below, and a practical mining engineer who visited the colliery gave as his opinión that this alone was wortli all the ontlay, even if the light surved no other jiurpose.
