An English civil eng-ineer, resident of Calcutta, has ia his possession a. valnable elephant. to which he s much attaehed, says the St. Louis l'ost-Dispatch. Xot ago the animal was afflieted with a vcry troublesomo inQammatlön of the eyes, from which he lost his sig-ht. The disconsolate owner consulted a surg-eon and begped him to do l-.is utmost to cure the elephant. The surgeon decided to use lapis infernalis, a remedy which is vcry eiïicaciois in .similar o.íilictions of the man eye. The keeper was callea, and B few mumentsafterward the elephant wus made to kneel down before the man o f science. who quickly fcre one of the inflamed eyes with the cau.stic. As soon as the elephant fult the eiïects of the burning solutipn, he uttereJ a terrifle rnar and, maddencd with pain. r;m armn;l in liis eage, tearing down everythlng that carne in his v.uv. It was f,e%Teral hours before he coúld be pacified by his keeper. VVhen Beveral days afterward the snr(jeon paid his second visit. he fonnd to liis rreat surprise that his treatment had worked wonders. for the eye was entirely cured. lie cleciueü to use tne same remedy on the other ej-e, but. to avoid all danger. ordered the animal to be chained. Th is precaution, however, was unnecessary, for as soon as the elephant heard the surgeon's voice he knelt down befare him of his own accord and during the entire operation, which was very painfnl, uttered no crv. but instead rabbed liis tronk caressingly up and down the surgeon's body. When the latter had linished the operation the animal followed him to the door of his eag-e and seemed lotli to part with him. The second treatment resultad in tïie entire cure of the eyes of the elephant.
