Marble Made With Electricity
The latesfe achievement of science is the artificial production of marble f rom pure calcium carbonate. M. H. le Chatalier, a French chemist, I takes the calcium in the form of an impalpable powder and compresses it in a steel cylinder between two pistons with a pressure of 2,000 pounds to the square inch. While in this condition a platinum spiral, previously imbedded in the powder, is heated by an electric current, with the resul t that the powder in the neighborhood of the wire is rendered crystalline and translucent. Sectious of the resulting substanco when examinad underneath a microscope exhibited the characteristics of certaiu specimens of slightly mucled marble. This remarkable work of the electric current-may prove the stepping stone to greater achievements in the production of artificial stone of all kinds.
