The licorice pl.uit Is a small shrub with ü-ght foliage, growing to about three feet high where its roots reach the water. It growa without any cultivatiou. No Iands are leased for the purpose, and no objection is made to its bêing cultivated. It grows on red earth soil and also on light, almoet sandy, where the wood is i.c-i. proTided it has plenty of water, and the ground is not more than liity i'ct t from the actual rlver or stream. These woods, after onse being dug up, grow better al'terwards. The time of collecting is generally during the winter, but it is poseible all the year round. The root when dug is full of water and must be allowed to dry, whiüh takes the best part of a year. It is then sawed or cut into smal] pieces ironi six inches to a foot long. The good and sound pieces are kept and the rotten ones are used for i'irewood. It is then taken in native boats t" Bussorah, whenoe i iv.ped in pressed bales to London, and a ga in from there to America, where it ia uscd largely in fue manufacture
