In the earllest calendara of the Jewish natioin, as well as in those of the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, no inontion is made of the lst of January. The year dkl not begin with that month, but with March ; but when Numa Pompilius became emperor he added January and February. The first momth he'named in honor of the god Janus, the deity who was supposed fco preside over doors and gates, and might be inferred to have something to do with 'the opening of the year. The Romans dedicated the whole month to their god because at thiit time, the husbandnien in southern Italy began their labors in the fields and vineyards. The emperor also decreed that henceforth the first diiy, or the ''oaleodB" of January, should be celebrated at New Yea'r's day. . llrs.
