Editor Courieb: The spring election will present a feature that lias not been observed for many yéars, ií ever, in the history of this city. Strange as the heading of this article may read, if the words of the Democratie Douinee's friends, as used in the Republiean caucas and convention,-on Saturday night last, when urging hini as a candidate for mayor on the Repufolican ticket, (wliich thcy offered to back witb their money) were true, still it is a fact, ithat Warren E. Walker was a gooá Rep! ublican, and ha] been for some time. Now, we know tliat the Republicán standard bearer is a staunch Kepni)lican- he having iilled tbat positïoi) when there was not a " ghost of a chance " of his seeuiinji the election. líe isa stockholder in une of the leadingmanufacturing establisliint-nts of the city, a doctor of well-known repute, and an honored professor in the L'niversity of Michigan. In fact, he is a gentleman honored and respected by all whoknow him, and can onlv be opposed ou account of the nosition he takes, as a man, by a few cranks, or would-be dicliitors as to how our city governinent thould be run, irrespective of the laws of our state and city. But what are we to say of the'Democratic oandidate tor mayor? Well, he was a soldier in the warof the refeellion, wan Bupposed to l)e a Republican until the greenback eraze struck the country, and lie was choseii as a candidale for the legislature, running on two tickels. but being defeated in the district by over 100 majority. Since that time, by maiiy öf those wiio know him personally il has been a questioü as to liis political position. He was once nominated for justice of the peace but was déféated. Some of liis soldier friends noriiiiiated hiui for alderman of the third wkrd, on tlie Republicau ticket, a couple of years agO, and by hard wuik 6UCoeled in i'airyiug the ward for him by a majörity of two. lint tliis office he sóoa rcsigiieil, for the purpose of securiug a uuder the Democratie adniimstritlioii at the Soldiers' Home, near Grand Bapids. When Capt. Manly resigned, he also ti ok liis departure and came home. Now, he lias aecepted the nonünation for mayor on the Democratie city ticket. Will soine oue teil us what his politica] complexión is, or how a Repvblican, orairui soldier, (who believes in votimr I the principies for which he foufjht, can vote for him urider the present circumstances? A Life Long Reitblua.n.
