A junior momber of one of our prominent milling fĂrms knows how it s t be caught in a flood, and hereafter v, ben he reads about inundations in different parta of the country will heave a great sigh and be thankful that it is not he. On Thursday evening last the water became so plentiful the hero of tliis tale thought he would go to the little dam that holds the water that comes down the rivulet emptying itito Allen's Creek, just in the rear of Toms' greenhouse grounds, on Miller ave., and open the floodgates, so that the land in that vicinity would not be inundated. He succeeded in opening the gates all right and the pentup waters rushed through in a hurry. The volume of water was so great that the opening in the culvert at Miller ave., would only allow a portion of it to pass through, conseqnently it backed up, and in so doing surrounded the gentleman. He was completely hemmed in witli water waist deep or more. Espying the familiar form of the late candidate for mayor on the democratie ticket he used hia lungs for all they were worth. But the ex-candidate's boats were all taken to Zukey Lake just after election and he coukl not aid him. No help eould be procured, although it is asserted that large soms were oflered to the assembled erowds to rescue him. There were two ways out. He must either swim to the other shore, or wait antil the waters receded. He ohose the atter, and for two long xveary hours he stood upon that dam and g'azed upon ;he damp, fine scenery Burrounding lim. Then the waters subsided, and with a flood of emotions he walked over the muddy wastes left by the recediug waves and was saved. This is a stricty true incident of the recent storm.
