The firet May Festival has come and gou ■, au 1 the first May Festival a m gn!íl3Ont succes. '' li j u'! (■■'!'■■( in - 'i succes, r'ih')ut exii ' aas ever been known in Mirhigaoï, and w doubt noi in the Ie were present from all parí i te, aaw3 a number from Otiher ,-iüics, iiiud the capacity oï the great hall was ineuffieient to aecommodate all wi.! seats who deí to see au 1 hear it. At each ol tli e thrae concerta there wasnot evea sin room, provlng tli:it the aggregate atteadance must have been nearly 10,000. The eomoert Friclay evenln was largely au intiotluetion of the orchestra, an;l ir was a favorable one. Although aai Aun Arbor audienee had listened to the Boston. Symphony Oreliestra, to Theodore Thomas' Orchestra, atnid to Séldl's, yet the exeeutiou of tfoeai artists was so admirable that it elifited the wanme&t pratees. Tlie lüillads of Miiss Rose Stewart, Miss fieiriudi' May Steln, and Mr. Max Heim ii'li pleased the audience vry ju i :- 1 1 . Miiss Stewajct, espeeially, wias wannly reoedved, her sweet volee, petitte figure -and graee.'ul manner ni]iii tting i'ie hearta oí lier dearers. Mr. 'K'idlii'iiii l.-o won for himselí a irni place a i ■ iovevs of piano mu-i ■. Oae lady remarked: "Why, I believe I like hJm better ili,,n Padereweki." And then too, he ha 1 a mucJi more civilized head. At U ■■ afteraoon conoert Miss S axt ;i,i:: mm tlic audience wild and ■■i to an i i o: e. i-'ciix Wiiintemitz, the yo-ung Violinlst, did Hkewise, hls s'.cill ivíihhuí hhn lunch praAsö. Mr. Gie&e, the 'celloist gav;' evidente 'tk:it lus fame came irn:i mrit, and all three of these ar1 aam rest assured tUtit a grand receptioo awalts tliem should they ever appear liere again. Tlie gnand culniinathit; event of the Festival, was the rendition of Terdi's Requiem, by the Choral Unioa with 280 traiïifd vodoes, assisted by Miss Eimma Juoh, soprano; Miss Gertrude May (Stedin, mezzo eoprajao ; Mr. E. C. Tiuriic, tenor; and Max Heinïich, baritone, as soloists, aad the Boston Festival OrcJbuestra. The euppJy of adjectives in botH V':'l)iiT. Woreeeter and tlie new Funk lV WagmalTs cHctioJiarlee ar insufflcient in do Justlce to this concert. The chorus mever [jefore reached such periciiion. Nrer before has it been so fleserring oï tlie praises of the people. ThO vast audiemoe seemed to be an inspiratioin to thean and they in turn vwpe a tlirilling revelation to the auidienoo. Thf duet by Mtee .Tul'Ii and Miss Stetn, Repordiiro. -Tesa pie. Quocí sum causa cuse vise; Ne me perdas illa die. Quserens me sedisti lassus Redemlsti erucem passus, Tantus labor non sit cassus. Juste judex nllioms, Donum fae rtíinissionis, Ante diein rationls. Which translated reads : Jesus. thiuk of thy wnyfaring, For mv sins the düatli-crown wcarins: Save me in that day despariug. Worn and weary tliou has soimkt me, By Thy cross and passion bought me, Spare the hope Thy labora Drought me. Righteous Judge of retribution. Give. 0 give me absolntiou. Ere that dayof dissolution, was a beautíiul thing, as sweet and cliaiiiiin.i; as was Over heard, in tliis place at least, and greatly improved the alreaily high opinioiis held of these iwo artists. They certainly appeart'd to better advantase in these duets amd nolos than they formerly had in bailad alnging. Here they were perfeet masters of their art. Mr. Townie smd Mr. Heinrich were oíd favoritos, tmd rendered tlieir part with perfectlon. Mr. Towne added new 'laui'el-i to hLs erown of popular'ty. anil 'Mr. Hejnrkh certamly lost none tihiat lie had heretofore won. T.he Ontlre iseries of eoncerts of the Festival were in the highest degree eucoeesful, and we very much doubt the ability of either the chorus, solo■ists .or the orchestra to tmprove upou it. Mr. Emfl Mo-llenihauer, the conductor of the Boston Festival orchestra, is mie of the most gracefui men ■who ever waved a wand in tliat capacity. Tlirodore Thomas is quite a klng in that respect, lmt Mnllenhauer is a ('hestcrfiWd. This fivst May Festival was such a glorloue suceese tliat Prof. Stanley annoiiiUH'il tlinl another would be Held next year, wben the Dainnation of Faust would be given by tlie chorus.
