Democratie papers have recently been making the most of the slight improvement in business which followed the adjournment of the Democratie ! congress. The relief which the people j feit from the awful strain of uncertaintv naturallv caused a little revival af business. This has been unduly magnified into a return of prosperity attendant upon the passage of the ! Wilson-Gorman tariff bul. Democratie papers in Michigan have given especial prominence to the fall trade in furniture, which results entirely from the fact that the retail dealers of the country have been laying in their winter stocks and not from Democratie legislation favorable to trade. lo offset the Democratie assertions that the furniture trade is booming and the factories are running on full time and to the extent of their capacity, it is necessary only to cite a few pertinent facts developed bv recent factory inspection. Statistics from the Michigan labor bureau show that about four per cent of the factories in the state are engaged in the manufacture of furniture. In the 72 furniture factories inspeeted up to October 15, employment is given to 6,044 persons, an average of 84 employés in eaeh factory. Tf these 72 plants were running their full time and capacity they would be employing 8,523 hands, or 7 per cent more than at present. These same 72 factories are losing1 444 hours, or 44,! days eaeh week by loss of time. as i pared with running full time. Cold f acts always knock the bottom out of Democratie fancies.
