In comparing the records of the Democratie and Eepublican administrations, the land department must not be overlooked. Under the act of congress, of September 28, 1850, granting swamp lands to the state of Michigan, there were patented to the state, during the "Winans administration, 279.37 acres. But these were patented not j upon applications made by Gov. Winans, but by his predecessor' Gov. Luce, and on evidence furnished by Land Commissioner Dix. Xot an acre was j secured from the general government under the terms of the swamp land act, during the Democratie administration, by any effort made by Democratie ] cials - if they made any eiïort at all. Since January 1, 1393, upon applications made by Gov. Rich and on evidence furnished by the present land department, there have been patented to the state 1,731.10 acres of land. These swamp lands are originally ' offered at SS per acre, so that, allowing the Democrats the credit for lands patented to the state in 1891 and 1892 (but for whieh they are really entitled to no credit, for the lands were conveyed to the state without any action on their partl the total value of the lands thus patented during the two administrations is as follows: 279.37 acres during Democratie administration 3ií34 96 1,731.10 acres during Eepublican administration S13.848 80 Credit cue Hepublican management SU. 613 84 This is but one instance out of many in which the administration of Gov. líich has been on the alert and successful in advancing the substantial interests of the state.
