Thomas Young, Auteur Beown, Chairman. Clerk. some new book shelves and for the coveringof the floor of one of the rooms with linoleum. The carpeting was done by Martin Haller, and cost $18.97. ïhe book shelves and weather strips around the Windows were put in by John J. Fergufion. The county offlcers complained of the uncomfortable condition of the rooms on the flrst floor, on account qf the excessive drai't through the west door, which was originally constructed so as to be self-closing, bnt from long use had become inoperative in that way. We ordered Mr. Ferguson to put in new springs, and also to erect storm doors with small Windows inserted in tbem, and various other lixtures necessary toa complete job. Tlie old springs of the door of the County Treasurer's office had also to be replaced by new ones, and weather strips afflxed to the windows in the office of tiie County Clerk. The Committee found, on investigation, that seyeral of the posts intended to support the roof of the court house were too short to reach their pedestals, and Mr. Ferguson was employed to insert suflïcient underphining to afford a solid support from tliem. This was also found to be the case with the supports in the tower in which are the clock dirtls, and tbey were similarly under-pinned. Mr. Ferguson 's charge for all this work was $82.43. Some repairs were found necessary to be done to the tools used in the engine room, and were made by Mr. Sutter, amouuting to $3.15. When Mr. l)avenport entered upon his duties as janitor, he called the attention of the Committee to the condition of thejanitor's i'ooms. and asked that they be re-papered and otherwise renovated. We made a careful investigation and decided that his request shotild be granted. Tlie work was satisfactorily done by E. A. Edmunds, at a cost of $71.74, whieh included repainting of all the woodwork. The attention of the Committee was also called to the absence of several of he cb imney caps, blown oft' during storm s, seriously aifecting the drai't of the flues, and to the condition of parta of the roof and eave-troughing. It was found necessary to mak e many repairs on the roof and eaves, and to put new caps on the chimneys. The work was given to James E. Harkins, wbose bill amounted to $84.15. He also made necessary repairs on the glitters and water-conductors about the roof, at an additional cost of $10.40. Repairs and supplies for the court house were also furnished by Hutzel & Co., from October, 1893, to April, 1894, amouuting to $32.65. Supplies and labor were furnished by J. J. Ferguson, in addition to those heretofore mentioned, amounting to $12.40; and this expense was incurred tor the purpose of improving the condition of the drinking fountains Jiroughout the court house and facili;ating access to the mechamcal at;achments conneeted with thern imderueath, by the hanging of doors, etc. At the request of the County Treasuier, Eberbach & Co. were engaged to place an electric alarm in that office, at a cost of $13 00. The Prosecuting Attomey requested the Committee to place a telephone in his ofh'ce, to afford him necessary communication with all partsof the county on business connected with his office, and obviate the necessity of repairing to the telephone in the County Clerk's otiice, or elsewhere, on such occasions; and after due deliberation the Committee concluded to accede to his request. The telephone will cost the county $48 a year. On the 2d of April, 1894, a small lire broke out near the top of the furnace chimney. The lire department was called, and in order to get access to the lire it was necessary to break through the wal] from the inside, just below the eave-trough. The iire was then soon extinguished. It appears that this chimney is constructed in two subdivisions, one containing the exit for smoke, etc., and the other being a ventilating pioe, whieh liad its outlet below the top of the chimney and near the eave-trough and cornice. The ventilator seerns to have become corroded by moisture to such an extenb that it was no longer adapted to the purpose for which it was intended. The es penditure for all repairs in consequence of the flre was $74.35. The adjustment of the insurance for this loss remains to be made by the underwriters. At the reqnest of Hou. William G. Doty, some repairs were made on the wash-basin in the office of the Judge of Probate, including a considerable quantity of new lead pipe and Vririous other necessary flxturos. the total expense being $14.45. ïhe Work was done by Kenny & Quinlaa. In the water closet one ot the basins was Eound broken, and a new one had to beprocured, repairs were made on the valves therein, and several of the old valve wheels replaced by new ones. This, with further repairs to tools in the boiler room, was attended by Mr. Suf ter, involving an expenditure of $8.20. The Committee had thirty-one young naaple, basswood and elm trees plantea on the court house lawn, íit a cost of fifty cents each. ïhe abundant spring rains gave them an excellent growth, and only two died. Lorenzo Young planted these trees, and warrants them for two years. THE COUNTY HOUSE. ïhe flrst visit made to the County House by your Committtee, by request of the Superintendents of ('he Foor, was for the purpose of investigating the condition of some of the outbuildings, notably what is called the root house, and also to examino the condition of the heating apparatus. ïhe root house was found to be in a collapsing condition, caused by defective foundations; and we requested the Superintendents to have all necessary repairs or additions made, at their discretion, b.ut to follow the line of snggestions ol'fered by your Committee. This they afterwards did, and a great and mud) needed improvement has been eiïected. At a later date the Committee visited the County House, accompanied by Mr Jacob Schuh, of the flrm of Schub v Muehlig, to make arrangeiuents for tiie alterations considerad necessary in the apparatus for heating the building. Mr Sehuh made a careful investigation, anü was, employed to make the necessary improvements in the boilers, radiators and olher heating tixtures throughout the buildings, ilis work was done in a most satisfactory inanner and at a very reasonable charge. ïhe entire amouut expended on the County ilouse, including the bill of Mr. Schub, foots up $202.14. For several years it has been in conteinplation to propicie better shelter for the liogs belonging to the county, and several consultations took place betweew your Camuaittee and the Superintendents in regard to the erection of a new and improved liog house on a different site from the one previously occupied. We finally decided to erect a building HO by 40 i'eet, with stone foundations and a cemented Hoor. A building lias been construoted that isa credit to the county, and will be of permanent and all-sufflcient usefulness. The, entire cost of materials and labor was $591.85. Itemized bilis for all repairs made at the county house, and for the expense iacurred in erecting the new hog house, have been iurnished by the Superintendents of the Foor, and accompany this report. The bilis aggregate $777.97. THK COUNTY JAIL,. Repairs were found necessary on the eave-troughing at the jail, and were ordered done by J. E. Ilarkins, at au expense of $10.40 for labor and materials. For repairs and supplies by Hutzel & Co., an iteiüized bill of which accompanies this report, there was an expenditure of $23.50. Ordered by the Sheriff. For mouldings, repair ing screens, etc, Luick Bros. were paid $(.O8. This work was ordered by the Sheriff. The foundation under tlie veranda I having become partially undermined by rains, and the heavy structure having begun tó sig, Hugh McGuire was employed to put in stone pillars. 11e also pointed up tlie walls of the entrance to the cellar, and renewed the brickwoi-k of tlie area óf theeast cellar window, besides doing some pointing up on the south wall of the jail. The work eost $14.50. The .Sheriff reported to your Cominittee, about the first of June, that the jail cesspool required emptying, as the contents were overflowing. A scavenejer was eraployed, and it re■ quirod a day and a night to einpty it, aiidcost$l5. The work was done by John Phillips and an assistant. It was nsurance com]anies. The insurance on tlie county house and jail was reïiewed at the old rates.
