Frederick C. Lee gave a very cniertaiiniing Tecture last evening, be'oire tJie Inlamd League, haing for ïfe subject "The Lady Or The Tiger." The story of Mr. Stockton with this title, furaialied the text. The readimg public will remember hO'W t-hat story ended, ar rather {ailed to eind. In the olden time one form oí trial was by placing a famislied tigeriin a ca.ge at ome side of au arena and at the ather edde a beautiful maiden, and if the accused chose the tig-er, it was comsidered ampie prooi of bis guilt, and was immediatly devoured by the hungry beast. If he chose the cage with the lady, it was ïroo'f positive that he was innocent, uv the lady beca.me his bride. Tlie story having this titlo tells of i fine yoaing man who aspired to the hand of the kimg's daughter. That "was his only offense. Rut it enraged the kilng and he condemned üie j'oung man to the tisual ordeal. On one cago Tras placed a beautiful malden, a -former sweetilieart, in the othpr, thO tiger. The king's daughter in same way tained kno'wledge ai what maiden liad been selected íor the cage, and was filled with jealoais ethereat, and before gofag to the arena that day manaiged to isccrtain in which oage was the maiden, and in which the tiger. As the condemned man entered the arena his eyes caught tliose oí the king'.s daughter. Something in the glance convinced him that she knew th secret, and as he glanced toward her again, she indicated by her fan which cago to choose. Here the aütho.r leaves the story to let each. reader complete it by hi9 or luer own imiagination. The lecturer gave many solutions, one of whdch "was that the tigei was ■the king's daughter herself. Then hie told oí social tigers, and political Kgers, and domestic tigers, and tigera oí nuany kinds. He was pleasing in address and handled the subject admiirably. All present feit that tliey had been well repaid for attendiing.
