Fitz John Porter, in his letter to Secretary Lanvont, eays : "1 respectfully recoinmend tliat a medal of honor le awnrded Jonathan W. Cliilds, late colonel of the Fouith Michigan Infantry, aistingnishecl bravery aaid gallnntiy displayed and marked serivces ireadered in the cliarge made with hls regiment across the Potom&c river at the ford near Shepardsfown, Yi., September 19, 18G2. On Sep.t. 10, after the l:ittle of Antietam, I was directed to push across the rivr and ascertain as near as posslble, the position and strengtli of Gen. Tee's army, which lay beyond tlie southern bank. Frel'inmary to the inoiement, ïowever, it was necessary to clear the southern bank of the enemy's airtillerj' and infantry commaiiiiing tlie ford. On oonferring with Gen. Griffin, avIio-c brig-ade was near that foa-d, and with otliei-s was to he engaged in the operation, Col. J. "W. Childs, cominaindiaig tJie Fo'Urtli Michigan InfantiT - paat of Grifïin's brigade - volunteereed to take liis regiment and niake tlie effort to capture the enemy's artillery. the ralor of the colonel and of tlie regiment, which also -lunt-eered, I accepted the offer, coiifltlent of success notwitlistanding I knew the undertaking was perilous in the extreme. Col. Childs led the attack with hfe regiment and succeeded ioi fording the rirer- near 300 yards wide - under tlie enemy's rakiiiig fire, drove the enemy from their position, captured several cannon and many pi-feonea-s and hotly and gallantly oxecuted all that was desired vit-h excellent resulta. A modal of honor would not only be a reeoginition of Col. Child's brave a,nd gallant acts, but tliose of a noble regümorrt." Col.
