Our readers will remeraber that a few days ago the Daily Courier recited the sad case of John Springmann, of Lodi, who had been deprived of liis pension, and charged with heing a deserter, because a former pension attorney had neglected to file the necessary papers with the Record división of the War department. Mr. W. K. Childs of tliis city, sent the paper to Senator McMillan, at Washington, who imediately called the attention of the war department to the matter. Senator McMillan sends us the reply of F. L. Ainsworth, the chief of the Record and Pension office, in which that gentleman says : "H'is case appears to be one in which relief couhl have been afforded under the provisions of the Act approved March 2, 1889, if an application for such relief had been filed prior to July 1, 1894, on which date the time for filing applications under the actexpired. But no application for remoyal of the charge of desertion in this case was receiveduntil December 5, 1894, and conseqnently the Department was unable o afford the desired relief. "However, a bilí to further extend he Act of March 2, 1889, bas been passed by the House of Representatives, iml "is hok pending in the Senate. It s suggested that your correspondent ie advised to renew the application in this case should the pending bilí be euacted into a law."
