Gold while in circulation is handled tess than any other medium. It is usually kept in the vaults of banks f or demandsrarely made, and for this reason the loss by abrasiĆ³n is about one-half of 1 per cent in any twenty years. In a. $20 gold piece,the standard weightof svhich is 516 grains, the government allowance for loss by abrasiĆ³n is 2. 58 gTains, but, except in cases where the coins have been tampered with by "sweaters," the losa rarely exceeds this limit
