The following article from tlie Ann Arbor Democrat, expresse the prevailing opinión in regard to the proposed charter tinkering on the salary question : "Stroag opposition is being sliown in many quarters to the proposed charter chauges giving salaries to ouraldermen, council president and mayor. It does seern tliat enougli capable men can be fouud in Ann Arbor who will give their time to the city's interests in the future as in the past, without further salaries than the present liberal allowance of one dollar per year to the mayor. Ann Arbor can ahvays he well served in her city goverament with progressiye, educated, business men, because her exceptional educational and business advantages will continue to attraet profioieut men in all professions. Tlie last thing lt. w liich city oliicers öf tliis charaeter would descend, is the petty ax-grinding whicli charucterizes only too many actiona of salaried bfficers everywhere. Our offices have been well managed in the past by offleers who generally dotiated their services to the city and legislated without tbought of reward. If any salaries were attached to these offices they should be large enough to attract men of ability : and tliis additonal barden n Ann Arbor's tax-payers would liardly be welcoined by any bul the would be oflicers themselves."
