A Hastings man watched a lot of boys May whist, and be was surprised at tlieir lack of the elementary principies ot the game, and allowed that they played no sucb stiff game of whist as was in vogue ben be used to play it years ago. His son told h'im to liunt up one of bis old players, the best he could find, and a couple of the kids would try and learn the game from tliera. The}' were willing to plny second hand low or high, to learn the correct game. The old gentleman brought on his partner and sat down with confidence and began to pla} Some how or other the cards wouldn't run light, and the boys seemed to know what each held. Six straight defeats oí the old timers filled them so fnll of satisfactiou that they abandoned the school of instruction for the kids, and began to feompard notes as to what caused the trouble. Both decided it was due to democratie rule. Both are perfectly whist abont wliist, whenever the game is mentioned. In tho meántime, the yoving larks are adopting a new code of signa, tliat they inay still keep the lead.-
