The following editorial f rom the Pontiac Daily Gazette illustrates well the mistaban notion that is current throughout the state relative to what the people are paying for the support of the University : It wouM not surprise people who have "their ears close to the ground," if lts houM be disco vered later era that the niinds of the masses of the tax payers oí Michigan, were becoining unalterably imbued with the idea that th o patrons of tile State XJnivereity must find scune oblier way to suppoi-t the institution than going into the tax payers' pockets for the sum oï trova $250,000 to $500,000 ajinually ; and that general taxation lo run an institution to furnisli facilitles for a university education to one in one thousand of the people of the state is not justified by public policy or welfare. The public discussion of tJiis question, caused by the Increasing animal requirements óf the State University, has crystíüized a sentiment of opposition ainong the masses of the people stronger and broader than we had reason to s-uppose existed, and wliieli bodes no good to the perpetuity of the Tniversity on its present basis of sustenance. Bless your soul Mr. Gazette, there has never been a year in the hlstory of the Uaiiversity Avhen tli state has paid $250,000 for its support. Not one. And as to $500,000, the thought of eve.n asking such a sum has never entered into the minds of the regemts. The state now pays $188,000 annually on the one-sixth mili tax, and $6.000 as special appropriatloh to the Homeopathie departinent. Tbat is e-ry cent that the people pay. Jïow caji't you remise your editorial (policy a little ?
