At the annual meeting of the High School Alumni association of Grand Rapids, last Friday evening, it was decided to establisb a Bcholarship fund to aid worthy and needy graduates of that school in the Uniyersity. The plan s set forth in the following pledge, which is much akin to the plan in vogue with the Detroit higli school: "For the purpose of extendí ug the usefulness of the Grand Rápida High school we, the midersigued, agree to pay to the Grand Rapids High School Scholarahip Fund Assuciation the snui of $10 annually for iive years ; the flrst payment to be made June 1, 1895, and the reniaining payments on the first day of June in each successi ve year ; said payments to be used for the exclusive purpose oL aiding meritorious graduatea of the Grand Rapids High bchool in securing an education in the University of Michigan." The Detroit plan s to loan not to xceed $250 per year to one pupil for which the pupil Rives liis or her note. Tliia note secured by a $1,000 life insurance policy and becoines payable one year after the graduation of the pupil after which it draws four per cent interest. In order to be helped through college by the fund the pupil must have shown rnerit iu his or her record in the high school, and in written application must state that he or she is uuable to get the education desired through financial disability unless outside aid is given. The whóle transaction of borrowing money from this fund is kept a secret. More high schools of the state might well emulate the example of Grand Rapids and Detroit.
