For the fourth iime In the flve years that the Northern Oratorical League bus had existence, the Untversity of Michigan lias won first place in the oratorical contest. James H. Mays easily won the honors in last night's coutest, with five coinpetitors against him. The other speakers were as follows : Ilarry W. Iíanson, University of Iowa, "The Waudering Jew ;" Roduey A. Elward, University of Wisconsin, on the same subject; H..F. Atwood, University of Chicago, "Reason for a new Political Party;" Eli P. Bennett, Western University, "Wendell Phillips, a Production of his Time ;"-„C. R. Ravmoud, Oberlin, "Recent Americanism. " Tlie decisión for Mr. Mays was almost unaniinous, his treatment of the subject, "Internationalism,".being masterly.He captured the audience completely and the judges' verdict wra heartily endorsed. He traced the development of internatioiialism kom the uniting of the wandering tribes and communities ages ago through the advancing civilization to the peace of Westphalia, the treaty of Geneva and the Pau American congress. His peroration was an eloquent plea for astill closer brotherhood oí nations, whkh would mean peacc, mutual protection and the betterment of the world. The judges were Principal Pray, of Wisconsin Agricultural College; Victor íbender, of the Couiicil Bluffá Nonparil ; Rev. Robert Stapleton, of Belle 3laine, Ia., President McMicbaels, of Iemnouth College, Nonmouth, 111. ;and ■"resident Carhart, of Minnesota State Normal School. Their decisión laced the contestants in the following order: Michigan, iirst; Wisconsin, econd ; Oberlin, tliird; Iowa, fourth; Chicago and Western tied for fith place. Aiter the contesta banquet was given, and among those t'1io responded to toasts was F. L. Ingraham, of the U. of M. He spoke on "The Secret of Orator}'." Mr. Mays will be met at the 10:25 train tonight and will be given a hearty reception.
