The senior law oratorical contest for ;he purpose of selecting the class orator ook place in the law lecture room Moi.lay eve. President Walsh made a few ntroductory remarles, after which II. L. Bright took the floor. Mr. Bright ,ook as his subject, "Tlie Lawyer in Our National Life." The next peaker was M. H. Scott, who diseussed "Labor and Socialism." J. F. ienry spoke on "Our National Probems and Perpetuity." "Webster and he Constitution," was the subject of .li e next oration, which was delivered y J. N. Davis. L. G. Long followed with an oration entitled "The Relation of Modern Isms to Progress." M. H. 3orter took as his subject, "Wendell Phillips." The last speaker was A. E. )avis whose subject was "Law and jiberty as the Basis of Government." The contest on the whole was good, several of the orations being of a high order. Professors Bogle, Johnson and L'hoinpson were the judges on delivery, while the compositions were passed upon by Professors Mechein, Knowlton and Hempl. Tlie decisión of the judges gave L. ;. Long first place, and he will accordingy represent the class in tlie class-day exercises. Mr. Long won this contest with the same oration which he gave at Oberlin, Ohio, two years ago in the Northern Oratorical League contest. Mr. Long received first place on delivery and third on thought, Mr. A. E. Davis receiving first in thought and ;liird in delivery while J. N. Davis took second place, receiving second joth on thought and delivery. FIELD DAY POSTPONED. At tlie meeting of the university senate Monday eve., at the urgent request of Prof. Stanley, it was decided to allow the field day events to take place on a week day, and the date has accordingly aeen changed to next Tuesday, May 21. This is on account of the May Festival concert of Saturday afternoon. While ;he athletic management did not desire to place fieldday on the same-date witli the May Festival, there seemed no other way, inasmuch as the Saturday dates were all taken and permission could not at first be obfcained for holding the events on a week day. Last night's action has happily obviated all difficulty. There seenis to be every indication of a very successful field day, with more entries than usual. The events will be as follows : 100-yards dash ; 220-yards dash ; 440-yards run ; S80-yards run; mile run; mile walk; 120-yards hurdles ; 220-yards hurdles; running broad jump; running high jump ; yole vault ; shot put : and hammer thro.w. There will be no bicycle races, as the track is not properly bauked. S. L. A, OFI'ICERS FOK NEXT YEAR. The electoral -college of the Students Lecture Association met on Saturday and elected the following officers for ] 805-6, the laws electing their candidato for president for the first time in a good many years : 0. (i. Ryker, '96 law, president, H. G. Long, '97 medie, vice-president; Stanley Farnum, '96 dent, treásurer; W. H. Thompson, '96 lit, assis tant treasurer; V. F. Swan, '96 lit, recordins secretary ; H. B. Hoyt, '96 lit corresponding secretary; H. R. Crozier, '95 law, director for one year ; H II. Emmons, '97 lit, and H. S. Wilson, '97 dent, director for tliree years. ÜNIYEKSITY NOTES. Tlie May meeting of the board of regents will be held on Thursday. The Webster-Jeffersonian debate o Friday evening was won by the AVebster men by ten points. Cornell's glee and banjo clubs wil take a trip through England, Wales anc Scotland this summer. The first game of the interclaa base ball championship series will be playee next Monday beween the '95 and '96 li teams. It is probable that the Comedy Club will go to Adrián one week from Frida; night to present the same program thai was given here last Friday evening. An Owosso base ball manager was in the city Saturday lookiug for material rom the 'varsity nine. It is rumored nat he bagged souie good game for his state league team. The university senate passed a resoluion last evening to theeffect that it be the ense of that body that student corres)ondents guilty ofsendng out untrue re)oits injurious to the university should )e expelled by tlie faculty of the departnent to which the student belongs. At Saturday evening's meeting of Cansas studente temporary organizaron of the Kansas club was effected, a onstitution was adopted, J. G. Wine, 95 law, was chosen e h airman and Miss "Vlay Whitney, '96 lit, secretary. Pernanent officers will soon be elected.
