There was a mau I knew him well, He owued a little store, And he would have to stock ït up Three times a year or more. And when I'd take the paper np I would be sure to see His name aud business well display d, As names and trade should be. He had to build a larger store, For wider grew his ïame, Just like his trade, for unto him The buying public came. His rival said that trade was " dull," And looked in sore distress, And wondered if he let them know The '■ secret of success." He was the kindest hearted man We had in all the tovvn, His genial face was like a sun, It uever wore a Irown. He met hls rivaU at the door And look them by the liaud ; He showed them thro' a crowded store ; They eouldu't understand. '■ We hnmlle all the goods you do," The startled spokesman said ; " But trade has drifted down to you, with us 'tls nearlydead." " Impart the secret of your trade." The merehant smiled : " I think The anchor oí the business man Is labeled ' printers' ink.' " The genial merehant hath rctired, Xbe rlchest man, I think ; He doth ascribe his fortune to Trade's anchar- printers' ink.
