The Ann Arbor Art School has taken a vacation during the aummer like many other schools of the country, so now it proposes to fall into line agaiu, and begin work with them. The school has just passed its most successful year, in point of numbers and quality of work. The enthusiaem and application of the thirty pupils were maintained duriug the entire year, which certainly speaks well for the teachers, as well as pupils. Evidence of the good work was given in the .Tune exhibition, which will be pleasantly recalled by many Ann Arbor residents. We are sorry to lose Miss Pepple, a most capable and efficiƫnt teacher of black and white, who has given us her time on Saturday mornings for two years, in addition to her supervisory work in the public schools. Her exceptionally Iady-like manner combined with other strong qualities as a teacher made her exceedingly valuable and acceptable to the the art school. A most attractive offer from another city iti responsible for tlie loss to the art school as well as to the public schools. This change necessitates considerable readjusting, and it bas been impossible to make any deflnite announcements for next year at an earlier date. It is now expected that Miss Hunt will take charge of the class in black and white, and that Miss Helen Roby, of Detroit, so well known as a water color artist, will have charge of the work in color. The class in black and white will not open till Miss Hunt's return ahout the lst of October, hut it is expected that Miss Roby will begin her work somewhat sooner, upon just what date will be known early next week. Herpafter pupils will be expected to work in black and white one year before using color, or at least must satist'y the teacher of color that the ordinarv rules of perspective are well grounded and practical. Although Miss Roby is best known by her exquisite flower paintlng in aquarelle, she is also proficient n landscape and still life work iu both oils and water-color. She has liad the advantage of foreign study and travel, and enters upon her work with great enthusiasm. The art school may be congratulated upon securing ber services. She lias been a teacher at the Detroit Museum of Art the past year and will continue there the coming year. Those desiring to identify tliemselves with the art school can cali at my residence, 61 Washington st., any day tliis week after six o'clock, or on Friday the 30th at 4 p. m. at the art school rooms in the Masonic Block, when definite arrangements will be made for the coming year.
