Last night a tragedy was enacted on tlie Nortliside, resulting in the deat.li óf Miss Vena Johnson, a young girl of about 16 years of age. Asthe story is told the Couriet it is as follows : Ed. Hnrst and wil'e, who are colored people, live at No. 6 Maiden Lane, his occnpation being that of teamster. With tliein have been living for a time Mrs. Hurst's sister, Miss J Last night along about midnight, Miss Johnson got up and went ott doors, and returning went upon the stoop and rattled the front door. Her sister hearing the noise called to her husband and said to him that there was some one trying to break in the house. Miss Johnson repeated the noise, with the evident intentionof scaring the people inside. ïhen she opened the door and peaked in. Hurst called, and asked who was there, but received no reply, and as the girl opened the door the second time, Hurst believing it to be a hurglar flred. The shot took effect in the girl's abdomen, and she lived only a short time afterward. ïliey at once summoned a physician, but she liyed only an hour or so after lie arrived. Hurst carne up town and surrendered himselfto Sheriff Judson, telling him how the accident happened. He was detained until the coroner's jury should hold an inquest and report.
