Jolm Fletcher Hurst was boni in Dorchester cöunty, Maryland, Aug. 17, 1834. He graduated frotn Dickinson college in 1354, and after teaching for two years pursned theological studies at the universities of Halle and Heidelberg, Germany. He returued home in 1858 and entered the work of the miuistry in the Newark conference of the Methodist Episcopal church. In 1866 he again went to beconie theological instructor in the Methodist mission instituto at Bremen. Here he remained for three years, serving both as teacher and director of the institution. Ile also travelled exteusively in Europe, Syria and Egypt. In 1871 he returned to the United States, having been elected professor of historical theology in Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, N. Y., and in 1873 he was choseu president of that institution. Here he continued till 1880, when, at the general conference in Cincinnati, he was elected and ordained bishop. In the performance of bis episcopal duties he has not only visited every part of the United States but has spent much time abroad amono; tlie mission stations and conferences in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Bulgaria, and Italy, and also in India. He has been extensiyely occupied with literary labors, especially in the repróduction of the works of the nest Germán authors in English translations. He has translate.! Hagenbach's "History of the Church in the 18th and 19th Centuries;" Van Oosterzee's "Lectures in defense of John's Gospel;" Lauge's "Romans;" and Seneca's "Moral Essays." His original works are: "History of Rationalism ;" "Martyrs to the Tract Canse;" "Outlines of Biblical History;" "Life and Literature in the Fatherland ;" "Our Theological Culture;" "Biblïotheca Theologica;" and "A General History of the Christian Church." Dickinson College gave him a D. D. and Indiana Asbury University that of LL. D. AVhile he ranks among the very first of the Bishops as a powerful preacher, an impartial presiding officer and a wise administrator he is also widely known as the prime mover in the majestic enterprise of establishing in the city of bis residence, Washington, D. C., the noblest monument the church has ever undertaken to build - the American University.
