The increase of crime in the United States is something astounding. While the increase in population for Ihe past four decades has been 170 per cent., which in itself Is raarvelcuis, the increase in the criminal clasí) for the same length of time has teen 445 per cent. Thus it wiU l) enoted that our jail inmates tncrease twice as fast as our regular population. As by far the larger port ion of these crimináis are sons end daughters oí crimináis, and inteiH criminal tendencles from their paients, there is considerable food for thought in these figures. The death of J. V. Telt. of the ,UV.ioi. Recorder on Oct, 21st, removed one of the best newspaper men in the state. It WiU be dilficult to Hil bis place and when the pencil pushei-N gather at their annual meetings anti his vacant chair will be the eause oí many sincere regrets. He was a gradúate of the University lit elass of '77 Would there were more sheriffs like th one in Tiffin, Ohio, who, the other night, shot down two of a mob ohich was after the Ufe of a man confined in the jail. This sheriff, deserves the praise of every citlzei'. who desires the Vaw sustained. There are states in the Union where njobe are practically unrestrained at svcb times and their acts go unrelitiked.- Jonesville Independent. Mayor Pingree was not i'ound wantInL when asked to appear beiore: the Detroit Chamber of Commerce and "explain' hls acts as Mayor last week. He "explained" in a way the board üttle dreamed of, and instead of setting him in a hole, and, of laBhlng hini lor eupposed misdeeds, he stood up and lashed the Board. And he Öid the lashing with a clean cut lash baring needies in the cracker, so that fery time it carne around the bodies of the members it pricked through tbeir hides. It was certalnly the teenest and brightest speech that the mayor ever deüvered, and the points he made had an excellent effect. It was in astonishing contrast to the speech of his mayoralty opponent, Sam Goldwater, of the day before. Sam Bcuttled his honest convictions, and salved over everything, in order catch the votes of the board. His Donor, however, did the very opposlte, and scored the board vmmercifully tor its actions in tha past. It was not a Bhrewd piece of political lignring by Tingree's opponents to gct the two candidates to speak there. - - - ■ This thing doesn't seem to jibe, fcmo -way. A democratie adminIstratlon aad the worst drougth the country ever had. Quite a pheïiomenon. John D. Iïockefeller h.is given an01 her $1.000.000 to the Chicago Unl■ïei&ity, payableJan. 1. 1S96, in cash or mierest ben ring seeurltles. And ;■:', dOO.OOO payable in the same tnan],i, on or bef ore Jan. lst, 1900. Th people real'y contribute this money v bei, tfhey buy kerosene oil, naptha, e1c. the profits of which go into Mr. Jiockefeller's poekets. It this philauthropic gentleman wants to do a really magnüicent thing, and aiake.his Chicago University the richest is far as money goes, of any in the world, he should turn over his Standard Oil ('o's stock to the institution. Then Lia university would work to the fionl financially "as slick as grease." Au: yet, money does not accomplish eierythlng, after all. It is only a, fow months since a professor in this college of Mr. Eockefeller's was discharged because he had dared to eriticise the actions of certain greedy corporations. Mr. RockefeUer does not iLtend that his money shall be used t; favor freedom of speech and tliought, but he wlio accepts a salary cue of it must bend the knee and ciinge to monopolies and great f.orpoiate trusts. And yet this school ei his, in order to secure caste, is supposed to be run under the guidance anti care of a religious denomination, sur pretends to be founded upon the exact justice of the teachings of ihe Ssviour of mankind.
