Under date oí the 26tli uit., Bro Smith of the Monroe Democrat, ï rites to Printer's Ink : I have lately seen reproduced in several newspapers, irorn your widely read publication, extracts irom nn artide therein referring to my elïorts in the Monroe, Mich., Demociat, In terms that might well inilate and excuse the pride of writers whose nierits (ar outreach mine. I do not know how my humble vork cam to your notice, bufc am very grateful forsuch a glowing compliment from so high a source, and assure you that nothing has given m; such gratification since Michigan's obituary poet was hooked by a buil, three years ago. 3y this I hope you beüéve that I have choseü the highest and most intensiiied forni known to me of conveying my appreciation. I beg you, bear with me while I stato that I experienced a deHcious sciise of the renewal of youth, as my deüghted eye caught the phrase "budding genius." It eeemed as f the liearise had gone to the funeral and lelt the "leading man" a -villing sti aggler behind the procession. I haii been apprehensive that instead of a tow-line to snake me up glory's eminence. I needed breecliing zo hold me back from the grave. -'I3udding genius !" I was a "budding genius," but that belongs to the hlstory of a period -when I was told- and believed - that a mustache could be promoted by daubiag the upper lip with cream and letting the cat lick it Oif ; and indeed it did make the halr grow- on the cat. Again thanking you for j'our unsoliciteol compliment (for like many o thora I am glad to have better than I deserve) I will request the favor ot a copy of Printer's Ink containing it (probably about Oct. 20) and inclose Ktamps tiere'or. Care of Democrat, Monroe, Micli.
