Col. Thomas A. Scott was eingularly unassuming in his dress and demeanor. When he was assistant secretary of war lie had occasion to visit Gen. Pope at his headquarters at New Madrid, Mo. Gen. Pope was greatly addicted to profanity and violence of manner. Col. Scott entered the headquvrters with the reinark, "I should like to see Gen. Pope on business." "See my adjutant!" roared Pope. "My business is with Gen. Pope in person." "Bland, blank your business; sec my adjutant, 1 tell you." "My name ia Sci í: " ''I don't care whether your name is Scott, or Jones, or Smith, or Brown. See my adjutant, blank, blank you." ■"As I was about to say, my name ie Scott, and I wish to see you on government business. I have the honor to be assistant secretary of war." Pope's demeanor underweut a re vol ution, and he said in the blandest manner: "I beg your pardon colonel. ] íad no iutention to be rude, but there are so many loafers in camp and the iniioy me so mnch that I ain sometimes put out of temper. Be good euough to take a seat and have the kindness to in:orm me of your wishes." Col. Scott at once entered upon the ausiness in band, making no reference whatever to Pope's outrageous behavior, and acted just as though the occarrence
