"Yli oever wrote thislmew what they were talking about : The tongue of slauder is nevei1 tired. In one way or another it manages to keep itself in constant employment. .Sometinies it drips honey; sometimes gall. It is bitter now and sometimes weet. It Insinuates or assails directly, acoording to clrcumètances. It will hide a curse under a smooth word, and admlaistet poison in phrase of love. Like death , "it loves a shining mark." And it is never so available and eloquent as when it can blight the hopes of the noble minded, soil the reputation of tlie pure, and break down and destroy tlie reputation of the brave and strong. AVhat pleasure man or woman can iind in such woi-k we have never been able to see. And yet there is pleasure of some sort in it for multitudes, or they w-ouid not be gTnti.ied by it. But no soul in hfeli estat can take delight In it. It indicates lapse, tendency tott'ard chaos, utter depravity. It proves ttiat somewhere in the soul there is weakness, waste, evil nature. Education and refinement are no proof against it. They often serve only to polisli the elanderous t ongue, increasing its tact, lts suppleness and its strategy.
