Concurrent Resolution No. C, approved March 2O, 1895, requeste the governor to cali the attention of the people of tlhis Ktate to the importance of planting trees for ornament, by naming a day upon which this work sliall be givea (special attention, to be known as "Arbor Day." In accordance wlth the above resolution and wlth the long established custom of our state, Friday, May 1, 1896, is hereby designated as "Arbar Day. ' The people are earnestly requested to observe the day by setting out trees, tíhrubs and vines about flieir homes and upon our Iiighways and public places. The exercises in our public schools upon that day tshould be of a character t'hat will impress upon the mmds of our youth the material benefits derived f rom its observance. By precept and example our teachers sluould lead in a woTk that will not only bring lts reward to them, but remain as an incentive for future generatkwis to beautify and adorn our iait state. Our rapidly diminishing foreste and ttoe increased demand lor tshade and ornamental trees has caused the orgamization of "Forestry Association? wliose purpose is to preserve the foreste and edúcate tJhe people in the science of fopesfcry. These organiza tions deserre encouragement and it is to be hoped thai tbeir numbera will multiply. This occasion is taken to urge the preservation of the shade trees whic hnow Kiand along our country roads They inay damage the growlng erop slightly Vit in beauty, abade and protection froiu the wlnds they repay the damage they do many times over.
