The late Rev. Joel Jewoll, of Troy, ■ Pennsylvauin. is said to have , natetl the word "teetotaler." The story goes that a public temperance ' meeting in Hectoi-, New York, in 1828, he introduced into th epledge the let"0. P." for "old pledge," wliich pledged against distilled liquore, and "T" for "total" including both distilled and i'enmented liquors.
