As the Commencement season is liere once more, and as the older alumni oí the Ann Arbor high school are to hold their triennial gathering this year, on Monday, June 22, it seems fitting that niention should be made at this time of a few faets respecting the schools and the alumni. Turning to a volume of bound pamphlets, held sacred by the writer because of association, the flrst thing found is a " Catalogue of the Arm Arbor Union School fr the Academie Year 1858-59, publislu-d by the School District Board." The Board consisted of : George D. Hill, Moderator. Elihu B. Pond, Director. Augustus Widenmann, Assessor. Henry S. Frieze, Jofin M. Gregory, David Godfrey, Edwin Lawrence, Trustees. The only one living now out of that board is E. B. Pond. At that time Mr Gregory was State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Mr. Lawrence was judge of this circuit, which then included Jackson and Ingham counties, also. Daniel B. Briggs was snperintendent, and Claudius B. Grant was "Associate Teacher in Classical Department." Warren Jackson - how well the writer remembers the eyes in the back side of that teacher's head - was " Principal of the North Primary School," later known as the 4th ward school, on Isorth, now Kingsley, st. The "Gentlemen of the High School- Classical Department," were 52 in number, and among the names we note that of Hon. John F. Lawrence, who, with but one exception, Abratn Wines, is the only one of the number now residing in Ann Arbor. The ladies names also classified separately are also 52 in number. Sonie of whom are still living here, but a regard for the few remaining hairs on the apex of our occiput - (Daily Times will please note) - makes us very cautious about giving names. The Englishdepartmentcontained the names of 82 gentlemen and 85 ladies, the sexes being catalogued separately all through. There are 1,295 names printed in the pamphlet, all grades being included. With the assistance of Miss Lucy W. Chapin, the secretary of the Alumni Association, a list of those who have attained to some degree of prominence in scholastic, professional, political or j er lines, together with those who have married men of prominence, has been compiled. The claim is not made that it is a complete list, but all are mentioned of whom any information could be obtained. Class of 1860: Anna E. P. Eastman.
