There was not a large attendance upon the meeting called ly Actlng 31 ayo r Hiseoi-k last Friday ovening it the court house, though the spirit mainifested by tliose who weré present was excellent. The fact is it appears tu be a very hard tinie just now for most of oui' business men to more 1hau meet their actual expenses. A committee was appointed, conBtetlng of H. J. Brown, Col. II. S, Dean, Chas. E. Hiscock, Eli "V. Moore, Tlios. J. Keech, and Evart H. Heott, ione frora ea.ch ward, to solicit HubBcription papers which were started t tholse present. The fact that there was upwards of $200 in th bank returned1 from a fund raised a cwuple of yeara ago for jtor the mioers in the upper península was brougrht to the atteintion of the mesting and that amount was ovdered ent ais a starter. The coanmittees are at work, but proigress seems slow. Meantlme otlier clties are respanding promptly.
