The present campaign is not only one of the most important that we have had since the war, but it is peculiar in its character. It is one in whieh parties are shifting and opinions are ihanging - a campaign in which the Democratie party has surrendered ontrol to its own worst elemente and jombined with an irresponsible populism. This combination is conducting an adroit canvass. It assails the national iionor, but veils the assault under appeals to individual cupidity, and shortsighted self interest. It juggles with fig-ures and makes skillful use of falla3Íous argumente. It s not surprising that many voters are a little dazed and uncertain as to their course. In this condition of n ff airs it is more important than ever that the ordinary campaig-n work of document distribu;ion and speech making should be supDlemented by the individual work of intelligent farmer, business, professional and laboring men. The bestargunents are on the side of sound money and of a well consideved tariff sj'stem, ind the facts sustain the argumetits.B rh e careful and painstaking presentaion of these facts and argumente to iis doubting neighbors is the best voi'k that the intelligent business man jan do in this campaign. This kind of vork is going to connt this year for ranch more than mere oratory, or the nfluence of the professional politician. But it will need to be persistent and continuous. to be carried into the school district and voting preeinct neetiug as well as to 1 be fireside and ,he country store. Common sense, commercial honesty and patriotism will carry Michigan every time when they are properly ippealed to.
