Inmieilinuly upon the adjouniment the co-unty convention the legislativo conveiitiou for the second district of this county met Lu the council room of the ccmrt house. It !was called to order by Ooi. H. S. Dean. wno proposed the name of Giras. E. Hiscoek for chairnian. Joihn Kalmbach, of Chelsca. was chosen secretary. AV. W. Wedenieyer gat the floor and made a fine speech proposing the name of Hou. Andrew J. rfawyer. In securing the floor bo quick, Mr. Wodemeyer ehut off another person who had been preparing a speech for several days for the sanie gentleman, whic'h may have 'een an unkind thing. and then again it may n-cnt have been. The name oí Emery E. Leiand, of Nwrühfield, was preeepted, ut Mr. Leland euonomnced that he was not a candidate. The nomioiaüon of Mr. Sawyer was tlien made unanimous. He was waited upon by a committee, brought in, and after thanking tihe convention In a marnier that only Mr. rtawyer can, he proceeded to give a ïine speeca upoa the issues of the cainpaign, dwelliing principally upo-n the financial question. It is to be fegretted that the speech was not ín a room where the entire crowd preseat could hear it as.hvas' their Jesire. George S. "VSTieeler, of Salem, iutroduced the following recolutions which gassed withiout a dissenting vote : "Rrsolved, That our candidate for the legfelature from the first representative district of the county of Washtenaw be and is hereby mstructed to use if elected IhiB best efforts to reduce tihe taxatiion af Uhis etate to thO lowest possitole limit consistent with the ecanomical admlnistration of tibe state government. "Ref-olved, That he use his lest effoi'ts to compel the corporations of taris state to bear an .equitable share of the taxes of thie 'State." Mr. W'hei Ier made an excellent argument in favo'.' of the fcentiment exsed, and warned the party that the country was bearing too great a barden and deserved toi have Us puWic servante make every effo.lt poseible toward economy. Mr. AVheeler did nolt touch upon the greatest waste oï all, at Lamsmg. the printing and dis'tri'bution of thousands upon thouaand'S r useless books, such tus Joint Dot uniente, statistical rereports, etc.. b;it he n,o doubt would have spo'ken about it had liO iven it fehoiuglit. On mobion the cha ir then appointed Geo. H. Pond, E. E. !Leland and John Heiinzman as district committee. The eonvenüon then adjoiivned. Instead of each electdon board Bendlng ome mem'ber to comstitute a board of county canvassers, the la-w 'has been changed bo that the boord of buperviP'ors shiall elect an electrón, board of threc members, who shall receive and canvas ttie votes, thus saving a great deal oí money.
