A new product, called fossil meal, is being introduced from Germany for preventing the loss oí heat from radiation which takes place to so large an extent from the uncovered surfaces of boilers, steam pipes, eylinders, and steam plant generalij. It consists of infusorial earth, obtained from certain mines in Hanover, combined with other -:'ibstances to secure greater strength and cohesiveiiess. This iilfusorial earth is composed of millions of minute organisms, whose hollow form gives to the fossil meal its high poroeity, and consequently its non-conducting power. The use of this material, however, is not confined to the manufacture of noncondueting composition for steam pipes and engine and boiler surfaces. It is used in safe making as a fire-resisting compourd, nnd by explosive manufacturera in the production of dynamite. . It is in demand for cold storage pur' poses, for covering cold pipes from contact with the warmer external air. It Is also employed in chemical manufacture; as a preven ti ve against damp; for cleaning glass and metal ; as a tooth paste; it is mnde up into blotting paper, and it is employed in the manufacture of sealing wax. It makes up into a flrebrick of one-fifth the ordinary ■wcight, with a fire-resisting qualily equal to that of quartz. It has many other uses, one of which is filtration and it is utilized for the domestio puriflcation of water.
