The colored republieans of the county met in eonvention at the eourt house Saturday afternoon. The object was to select a candidate for a olerkship at Lanslng, could suoh a position be secured by Mr. Sawyer. There were some thirty delegates and the result favored Francia J. Johnson, of Ypsiïauti, ior the position. Mr. M. W. Guy, a student in the Unlversity, was his opponent, and had worked up the scheme hoping in thiat way to get the backimg of the ooiored people óf the county for the posiition. But as in his previffort Ue was unsuccessful. Mr. Johnson is weid educated, a gjood penman, superintendent of the A. M. E. Sómday School ab Tpsilanti, and a man worthy ol the proposed honor. Germán universities ranked as follows regarding the nuinber of studente, last suramer: There were 4,640 in Berlín, 3,777 in Munich, 2,876 in Leipsic, 1,863 in Bonn, 1,425 inBreslau, 1,413 in Halle, 1,379 in Freiburg, 1,339 in Wurzburg, 1,172 in Tubingen, 1,164 in Heidelberg, 1,138 in Erlaugen, 1,007 in Gottingen, 965 in Marburg, 948 in Greifswald, 938 in Stranssburg, 761 in Jeda, 708 in Kiel, 700 in Konigsburg, (330 in Munster. The city of Pekin contains what is undoubtedh' the oldest university in the world. It is calléd the " School for the Sons of the Empire." The antiquity of the college is very great, and a granite register, consisting of stone columns, 320 in iiumber, contains the names of 60,000 graduates of the highest degrees.
