It was a great surprise to the peo ple o! Aran Arbor when they heard on Tiuii-sday last of the death, on that (lay, oí Kobert Phillilps, recently the oashier of thf State Saviings Bank oí tuis city. On account of ill foealth Mr. Phillips restgned the cashiership some weeks ago, and soon after went to LiouisviUe, Ky., where he hal a brath■er living. Some days ago he was atitacked with pne-umionla and owing to the weak condition oí his system, he oould no withstand the disease amd soon Buccumbed. Mr. Phillips was a Caaadian by ibirth, but Scotch by a.ncestry, and he loved the land oí his fathers, its bards, and its literature, and fairly reveled in the dialect poema of Bobbie Burns. He wae a genial, generous, pleasant gentleman. Mr. Phillips carne here a number of yeara ago ae assistant cashier of the Farmers" & Mechanics' Bank, where toe remained lor a time, and when the State Bavings Bank was organteed he was made cashier, remaining until a few weeks ago. He was one of the moet rapid men m handling money ever in Ann Arbor, and a natural born ta.nker. In social affairs he took a. prominent part, being espeoially active in the interests of the Cialedonian Society. There will be inaiiy a one regret liis untimely death.
